How To: Shoot with Both Eyes Open

Being able to shoot a pistol with both eyes open is a skill that anyone who uses a pistol will find beneficial, never mind if that person is a police officer.

If you carry a firearm for living, being able to shoot with both eyes open is a critical skill.

The trick is learning how to do it.

Here’s how:

Both Eyes Open Dry Fire Drill #1

With a clear & safe pistol, with a target that is in a safe direction, coming from the holster or ready gun:

  1. Line your sights up while keeping both eyes open.
  2. Blink your non-aiming eye to check the quality of your sight picture.
  3. If you need to adjust your sight picture, blink as you are adjusting your aim.

When you blink, you rapidly and repeatedly compare the two sight pictures (one vs two eye) and will start to recognize what a good sight picture looks like when you have both eyes open.

A few minutes a day with this drill will make a noticeable difference when you go to the range.

So, train, train, train.
